Fuels Technology & Additives (FT&A) is comprised of chemists, engineers, and technical specialists responsible for providing fuels technical service, consultation, and product research and development in support of Downstream Technology & Services business partners including the Americas Products, International Products, Manufacturing, and Product Supply & Trading (PSAT). This position reports to the Fuels/Additives Technical Team Lead and is located at Chevron's Richmond Technology Center.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
Providing high level chemistry, performance, and analytical support for Chevron finished fuels and deposit control additives, ensuring they meet Chevron quality and performance specifications as well as established industry standards throughout the distribution system.
Conducting ongoing retail and aftermarket competitive surveillance to assess and validate Chevron’s unbeatable positioning, as well as support for engine testing to measure additive performance undertaken by colleagues in the larger group.
Designing and developing analytical and other laboratory capabilities critical to the effective support of Chevron fuel additives, leading to improved understanding of various additive technologies and their relative product performance.
Interpreting the results of state-of-the-art analytical tools such as infrared spectroscopy, NMR, GC-FID, GC-MS, and LC-MS when applied to fuel and fuel additive analysis.
Providing technical contributions, collaboration, and understanding of long term research efforts in the area of deposit control additives.
Cross-training over time (i.e., across fuel oil, diesel, jet, aviation gasoline, motor gasoline, and LPG), since FT&A provides technical support for all Chevron finished fuels.
Adapting to frequently changing priorities and rapid pace of projects to meet the varying needs of the organizations we interact with.
Monitoring the competitive and intellectual property landscape in the field of fuel additives.
Potentially providing day-to-day work direction to a small number of personnel.
Rigorously upholding laboratory safety and compliance policies.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Chemistry -OR- pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry with an anticipated completion date in Spring 2021.
Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
An in-depth understanding of a wide range of chemical and physical principles, with an extensive knowledge or demonstrated ability to rapidly learn salient concepts in various chemical disciplines.
Demonstrated project management and execution skills, including the ability to manage and move multiple projects forward effectively, autonomously and independently, with excellent project planning, organizational, and multitasking skills.
Demonstrated teamwork and relationship-building skills that illustrate a passion for productive collaboration are essential, since strong collaboration both within the team and across team and internal organization boundaries is vital.
Effective written and oral communication skills are required due to the frequent interactions with clients and others.
Preferred Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.
Experience with advanced analytical instrumentation, such as NMR and infrared spectroscopy, GC-FID, GC-MS, and LC-MS, and the ability to make informed interpretation of analytical results gained in research or professional experience.
Extensive organic synthesis experience.
A solid foundation in physical organic chemistry concepts.
A demonstrated ability to apply chemical insight and an excellent understanding of reaction mechanisms and structure-function relationships.
Extensive experience with advanced analytical instrumentation.
Knowledge and skills in the area of test design methods and data analysis.
Relevant fuel additive chemistry expertise and knowledge.
