The Research Associate Chemist is a member of the Chemistry Development and Fundamentals Team at the Richmond Technology Center. The Chemist in this position will serve as an associate research chemist working closely with one of our Doctorate Chemists synthesizing new components in the area of surfactant chemicals.
This Chemist’s primary responsibilities are design, synthesis, purification and, analysis of organic molecules, as well as coordinating of bench and performance tests with our deposit control fundamentals subject matter experts.
The Chemist will be expected to contribute to the planning and synthesis of new molecules and will interact with a multi-disciplinary team, including process engineers, fundamental scientists and, product line specialists, to help accelerate product development, problem-solving, and commercialization.
Chemical synthesis is a major part of this position and so candidates with a proven track record in this area are highly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
Managing the day to day technical laboratory support of detergent synthesis.
Working frequently on non-routine tasks of broadly outlined assignments involving a wide range of chemistries and product line application.
The position is dynamic and requires a mix of laboratory skills depending on the project business need.
Maintaining a high degree of independence and responsibility, reliability and accountability in planning and reporting laboratory experiments.
Communicating clearly and effectively with junior/senior engineers in the Components Team to maximize productivity by applying special skills and experience routinely and by drawing on knowledge and skills of other experienced personnel.
This is a safety-sensitive position.
Required Qualifications:
MSc degree in chemistry or BSc in chemistry with at least one year of relevant industrial work experience
Demonstrated experience in research and technical competency in organic chemistry (as evidenced by papers, patents, or publications), analytical techniques (such as NMR, FTIR, GC-MS), and data interpretation of these techniques.
Familiar with laboratory protocols and prudent lab practices.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interface/consult/collaborate with other chemists and with service providers outside the organization.
Demonstrated communication skills including preparing technical reports and presentations of scientific data.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience working in a team environment
Strong organic synthesis and analysis background
Knowledge of Fuel and/or Lubricant additives.
